Understanding common final particles in Cantonese 5

Writer's picture: Carmen LuongCarmen Luong

This blog marks the conclusion of our Final Particles series in Cantonese. While there are still a few more complex and less common final particles that I won’t be covering in this series, you might come across them later in your Cantonese-learning journey. For now, I’ve equipped you with 25 essential particles that you can start practicing with confidence.

Additionally, there are many two-part final particles that combine elements of those you’ve already learned. These are relatively straightforward, and with practice, you’ll develop a sense of the context in which they are used. This blog’s particles:

  • 吖/丫 [aa1]

  • 咋 [zaa3]

  • 咋/喳 [zaa4]

  • 喎/啝 [wo4]

  • 喎/𡁜 [wo5]

Let’s dive into the final set of particles in this series and wrap up this fascinating topic.
